Chapter 19

If he was honest with himself, AJ was concerned. His stomach felt tight with anxiety as he skated out onto the ice for the game. While the game was important, he’d promised Lisa he’d stay the hell away from Dwight and wouldn’t beat him to a bloody pulp on the ice in front of a few thousand fans, just for fun.

I’m already regretting making that promise.

Anger bubbled inside him and he was restless and irritable. He couldn’t shake the pained look on Lisa’s face from the previous night after Dwight had assaulted her. She’d eventually calmed down and fallen asleep in his arms, but was obviously upset.

And rightly so. What’s so difficult to understand? No means no, it’s pretty simple. It’s one of the first words we learn to say – we all know what the hell it means.

As the game progressed, it began to descend into chaos. Both teams were sloppy and by the start of the second, a higher than normal number of players had spent time in the penalty box. AJ was frustrated. He had deliberately avoided spending any length of time on the ice with Dwight. He was holding his promise to Lisa, while simultaneously having a pretty good game.

If I do say so myself, he thought as he caught a pass from Jeremy behind Mike’s net in his own zone.

Wait. Is that Lisa scream-

He felt a shunt from behind, but couldn’t stop himself colliding with the thick plexi glass.

When he came to, he was disorientated and confused.

My mouth is so damn dry.

Where am I?

He immediately tried to sit up, but nothing happened.

What the hell? What’s going on? Where am I?

Panic struck him as he fought unconsciousness.

Stay awake, stay aw–

***

What time is it? Where am I? What day is it?

I hate this feeling. Like time is jumping around me and I have no idea what day or time it is. Not to mention I have absolutely no clue where I am.

Why can’t I move? Why can’t I speak? Have I been kidnapped? Am I tied down?

What the hell is going on?

Why am I so damn sleepy?

So many questions…

***

Is this a waiting room? What am I waiting for? Why can’t I remember?

He tried to speak, but couldn’t move his mouth. Or any other part of his body.

Overwhelmed by fear, he tried to open his eyes.

What the fuck is going on?

“You’re so pale, AJ,” someone said.

Ange? No, that’s not Ange. Who is that? It’s not Ana… Who…?

“You need a haircut, too. You’re getting a little shaggy.”

Her voice is so warm and full of emotion.

No, I don’t want to go back to sleep. No! Stop! Stay awake!

He felt her lips against his hand, and splashes of water falling onto his arm.

Is she crying? Why is she sad? Who the hell is she and why is she holding my hand?

Why can’t I move it?

Who are you? Your voice sounds familiar.

“You played so good tonight, Pim. I was proud of you. Even Jeremy was proud of you.”

Jeremy. She knows Jeremy. Played? My guitar? No.
